(CNSNews.com) - Americans who like traffic jams will have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, the Libertarian Party warns, noting that swarms of police officers - at the direction of federal bureaucrats - will set up random checkpoints to look for seatbelt scofflaws.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Libertarian Party noted that US Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater has announced a zero-tolerance policy for seatbelt violators.

Slater's office said 10,000 police departments in all 50 states will set up roadblocks, checkpoints, and unmarked patrol cars to look for people who aren't buckled up this holiday weekend.

The National Nannies are clearly out of control when they can deploy thousands of police officers, and inconvenience millions of holiday travelers, just because 3 percent of the public doesn't properly obey seatbelt laws, said Steve Dasbach, national director of the Libertarian Party.

Libertarians say the crackdown is a waste of police resources and a roadblock to Americans' holiday travel plans. But public service announcements on radio stations in the Washington, DC area are promoting the program as one focused on motorist safety during a traditionally busy period on the nation's highways.
