After several weeks of negotiations, Republican leaders in the Senate and House reached agreement on the outlines of their 7-year plan to balance the budget. The largest cuts will come from Medicare ($270 billion) and Medicaid ($180 billion), both of which are VITAL programs for women. However, Republican leaders refuse to specify HOW the cuts will be made to prevent concerned citizens from organizing in opposition. In fact, Republican leaders will do everything they can to avoid actually VOTING for these cuts, fearing angry seniors will hold them accountable in 1996. Instead, they plan to sneak the cuts into a massive "Reconciliation" bill that will be voted on under an undemocratic rule prohibiting any amendments. This stealth tactic is part of a consistent GOP plan to keep Americans in the dark about their efforts to turn the government over to wealthy special interests. Write your representatives and the media to challenge Republicans to reveal the facts about their "Stealth Budget."
