Shadows Fill the Hollows Left by Fall’s Progression
Sonja Kosler
When oak trees weary of their struggle
acorns bounce and roll,
beat a new tattoo
across the night time roof
Flower beds stripped of cover
reveal soiled mattresses
usually concealed beneath
blooms visited by bees and birds.
A cacophony of caws
moves through thickening air
as raucous crows lament
remnants of road kill lunch.
They roost in darkness
as snow brushes feathers
prepared to go from winter.
It is October twenty-second.
