The black hand society and how things can get out of hand
Stanley M Noah
On the streets of Sarajevo, 28 June 1914, a 19
year old waits for royalty to ride by in his black
convertible motor car, top down. He stood on
edge, with a 380 Browning pistol in one
pocket and cyanide pill in the other. Unfort
unately, the gun worked while later the pill
would fail. He shot the Archduke Ferdinand through
his neck, fired again, missed and hit the Duke’s
wife—killing both. At the
assassin’s (Gavrilo Princip) trial, a judge asked,
“what did you hope to accomplish by this act?”
Princip punctuated by remarking on two local
political reasons and then said, “I didn’t know it
would start a war!” He was a member of The
Black Hand, a collector of his own paradoxical
forms, recreating black-on-black humor.
