SOUNDS

Ashok Niyogi

The pujas (1) are upon us once again
From the 6th to the 10th day of the waxing moon;
Far in the distance a train trundles out
And honks its way,
Or perhaps it is conch shells (2) –
The blowing of conch shells to invoke the Goddess.
From my hospital room
I can’t make out.

(1) Pujas – Hindu worship (in this case) of the Goddess of Strength over Evil.
(2) Conch Shells – Ceremonially blown to invoke the Gods and Goddesses in the Hindu religion.
