Life in the Burbs

It’s just one cup of coffee in the morning
so if you don’t get that caffeine shakes.
You gag down oatmeal to lower your
cholesterol. It’s summer but you wear
a dark suit; that’s what the office expects.

You scowl as you write the check for
that deductible for your fender bender.
You’ve watched your diet carefully, so
the bathroom scales must be wrong.

Living for the weekend when you can
peer out of the rut, but you must mow
the lawn and if you have time you will
wash the car.

Gone is the youthful eager anticipation
of Friday night sex. It’s now become a
perfunctory mating ritual where my wife
wonders what color to paint the ceiling.
