A Cat Climbs
janine canan
A cat climbs onto the downy bed
and steps toward the magnificent woman
who stretches out her hand.
Tilting her rosy palm like a cup,
she pours herself into the tiny furry body
that arches hungrily to drink.
Soon the cat is humming like a cello.
But already the woman is tired
of the fragile electric yearning
that floods the room with thrilling music.
With one grand sweep of her hand
she empties the dregs -- and sends the cat flying.
