Whenever New Hearts Break
by Heinrich Heine (translation)
janine canan
Whenever new hearts break,
the stars above burst into laughter.
Laughing, they call down the blue distance:
Poor human beings
love with all their souls,
yet torment and torture each other to death.
We have never known this love
so fatal to the poor beings below --
that is why we are immortal.
