Two Pears
janine canan
We were two pears hanging on a tree.
You were gold, and I -- still green.
I thought we would always be together.
One day a violent wind took you instantly.
You plunged to the loamy world below.
While I, left hanging -- growing juicier,
was soon devoured by a throng of raucous birds,
whose bittersweet song now you hear.
