Mirabeau Bridge

by Guillaume Apollinaire (translation)

janine canan

Under Mirabeau Bridge flows the Seine --
and our loves.
Must I be reminded.
Joy always follows the pain.

Though night comes, the hour strikes.
The days disappear -- I remain.

Let us stand face to face
and hand in hand,
while that weary wave of Eternal Glances
passes under the bridge of our arms.

Though night comes, the hour strikes,
the days disappear -- I remain.

Love disappears like this flowing water --
love disappears.
How slow is life,
and hope -- how violent.

Though night comes, the hour strikes,
the days disappear -- I remain.

Days pass, and weeks pass.
Neither time past
nor our loves come again.
Under Mirabeau Bridge flows the Seine.

Though night comes, the hour strikes,
the days disappear -- I remain.
