“I understand your feelings
About Central Illinois,
But it’s not, like, Death Valley...!”
And they barked shattered dream char-hate at me
For every jeer they’d ever suffered, in school

We were all full of shit, Fate
Would have it,
I said these words, when we were 25 and 6,
They both went on to live in Illinois
The rest of their goddammed lives,
So, yes, you bet, they were full of shit, but not
By half,
I was full of shit, that very 1988 second,
I didn’t understand their feelings
Why would I want to do that?
