You ask is Death a robed figure

CEE

We stood in cold dusk
By a rotted cheap auto unused
It was dead enough,
Then, out of deepening chill
Up into tenement
Sensory overload poverty stench
An apartment building as dead as
The maintenance teams’ jobs,
The twentysomething in her low digs
Sat quiet in sparse dwelling
Choking down government oatmeal
Thumbing on lower shelf phone
Attempting to meme herself love
In pointing out her smiling tears,
Clothes years out of date
Needing a bath, the soap for it, the will
The apartment, she, dead of Alone
Of the onomatopoeia of Isolation
Of the social media lie of “friend”
Bare feet soot, as kitchen counter
The silence was all shroud
We slipped out, and outside

Only caught him in peripheral
Dark clothing, but who knows
Does that matter?
