Many Painful Steps

Eric Bonholtzer

Translucent hands grasp me as I crawl.
Trudging upwards, specters shade my ascent.
What I am, was, and will always ever be,
I bow my head and dissent,
Against What I Am

Another hand pulls back discarded bottles,
Glass breaks beneath my hands and knees,
Forever seeming unending,
Mottled dust chokes me as my lips bleed.
I Am A Proud Man

Hooks tether as my skin sheds
Another foothold, were there but twelve,
I am not alone in my struggle,
One and many support me, in the end it is only myself.
Another Day Goes By
And my Head Lifts with Pride

The hands seize upon my hesitation,
I say a prayer and they relent, I am free.
I walk trudging the road of hard destiny,
My pride walking beside me, it is all for me.
I Cast Bottle Fragments Aside
Another Day Goes By
As I look toward tomorrow and smile.
