Richard K. Williams

You first behold it
through the window
of the elevated train.
In a neighborhood of
brick, steel and chain link.
Feeling grey and shadowy
like an old sepia tone photo.
This standout building
four stories high
and a city block strong
charges your vision
like a subway screaming
into an underground station.

What starts out as
an overwhelming spectacle
of shape and color,
unsettling enough to
slant the landscape
making you feel unsteady.
But as you approach,
it swiftly transforms into
hundreds of amazing works of art.

This is no random vandalism
or a display of urban angst.
This is street art
of the highest order.
Expressions of beauty, danger and death
countless vibrant images
of imagination and reality
the fanciful and fantastic.
All emerged from incredible talent
And spray cans.
some just two colors some ten.

Wandering around
Over whelmed and agog
you wonder aloud
How did they do that
the shading, the style, the detail?
Some of the artists have street cred like
Stay High, Cope 2, Tats Cru and Banksy
Others are earning their bones.

You could spend hours circling
with each pass a new creation to see
But no gift shop;
Perhaps that’s why
the righteous scurry by
on their way to MOMA.
(Museum of Modern Art)
Its back turned in indignation
on its penniless neighbor
down the street.
