faith in my wings

i used to wish on shooting stars,
hoping beyond hope
that one day we would be reunited;
and you would be someone
other than the monster
they said you
were—

no one wants to be the daughter
of a monster,
everyone wants someone to love them;
but my mother was always at work and my
adoptive stepfather’s love was too
hard to earn

i stood in this limbo wondering if i would
ever find the strength to use my
wings—

but i realized you were but a shadow
in my life, and every bit the monster
they said;
at first it broke me and then it led me to
realize that i am the one with the power to define me

so i shed all my tears and leapt into the sky
with these wings because i trust them
more than i do humanity.
