i wonder if the love i’ve always
hungered for is even in the universe,
or if i speak a language no one
speaks any longer;
if my soul is a mythology
no one was ever taught
if my depths are too deep for anyone
to swim in?
won’t apologize for being me,
at any rate;
because in this universe
it is the only person can be
no one has my exact voice and vision
which is both a blessing and a curse
as is feeling everything so very
deeply—
the scent of autumn dances around me,
and people speak of love;
but i would rather be buried in the leaves
of ruby, carnelian, black opal, emerald,
and citrine
rather than be hurt by another human
professing love they do not mean—
leave me in the bones of autumn,
finding beauty in the macabre;
and every other place they told me to abandon
in my youth because they didn’t know
the power or beauty of my strange magic.
