Michael Ceraolo
(from a sequence titled “Some Afternoons and Evenings”)

In his farewell address today Eisenhower,
after a lifetime first serving, then directing it,
warned against “the military-industrial complex”:
“a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions”
that was something “new in the American experience”
Who says there is no irony in American life?
Of course, being ironic,
his warning wasn’t taken seriously then,
and
hasn’t been taken seriously in the sixty year since,
at least by anyone elected to public office
