The place

Jenene Ravesloot

is empty. I order a decaf to go. The sullen girl, with the wrapped scarf around her head, looks at me like she’s never heard of decaf. But she agrees to make some. I sit on one of those impossibly low stools and begin to spin round and round while I think about my dad back in the day when White Castle was his favorite destination for a bag of sliders and a greasy cup of chili before he’d head home to terrorize us kids. Those were the days. And that was then and this is now and a coatless young woman is coming through the café’s door who definitely isn’t dressed for winter and after her this guy who must be with her although you’d never know it. She hesitates then knocks on the women’s restroom door. A woman comes out. She’s holding one of those yellow Rubbermaid wet floor signs. Then, both of them go back into the women’s restroom and close the door. They don’t come out.
