Grabbing a coffee, I step into shadow; I step between cracks in the pavement, and between cracks in the surface of my first attempt in oils. I step into my father’s garage, that smells of oil and spilt peapod wine that slips through the cracks between my fingers. I finger the nap on the folded gaming table, with its card-slapped patches and coffee stains. I fold my poker face into oily shadow.
