Sacrificing

Christopher Alden

We scrabbled through a hole onto the roof, the scent of rising river water thick with danger. I watched the man help Granny into a basket. I sensed her fear and tried to jump in with her. But the man held me back. Then Granny rose, becoming smaller, sucked up through the air toward a whirring monster. The man knelt and stroked my face. I smelled his distress. “Sorry boy,” he said. “I’m not supposed to take dogs.” I pleaded, licking his face and wagging my tail. The empty basket was coming down. He sighed. “I hope you’re worth the trouble.”
