The friends he knows with AIDS
are not the ones he knew with AIDS.
He remembers Ken and Keith
in the early nineties,
nothing but skin and bones,
stuck in a dark bed,
fading away to nothing.
But now, Bob and Avery
jaunt about the hemispheres
like nothing’s wrong with them.
They work and party,
laugh and love,
like they’re cured
though they’re nothing of the sort.
It’s the drugs. It’s the regimen.
It’s the support centers.
He sheds a tear for Ken and Keith
from time to time.
But Bob and Avery, he buys a drink,
toasts their good health.
They could live long enough
to die of something else.
