Perfection shows what it conceals
unwrinkled by design
a public exhibition
of time’s disdain.

Youth is thrown back in its face
a rebuke to nature
a derisory imitation
of nothing that remains.

The mirror reflects
an invention of vanity
every pore a time-lapse
sagging into the past.

Flesh is tightened over worn bones
stitching up the years
stretching into the future
of low self-esteem.

Only delaying, displacing, disclosing
inevitability wrapped in a delusion
as facial lines lose originality
revealing what’s left behind.

Almost beyond recognition
is an identity compromised
a false profile
warped by scrutiny.

There’s been a journey
a detour around aging
searching for an earlier age.

Never to be found.
