There are times
When being alone
Makes so much sense

By myself I stop
Into a pub, a place I know
Where I’ve stopped before

I exchange pleasantries
With the owner, bartender
Then disappear within myself

Sipping my beer quietly
Introspective but aware
Of conversations around me

Nearly white noise
Snippets of dialog
Opinion, observation, bitching

Broken by occasional
Outbursts of laughter, accompanied
By stereo background music

Evidence of other peoples
Lives, loves, losses, distant
Like highway traffic sounds

In this instance I am
Truly content not to be
Involved with any of it
