bastard in my bed

3am wide awake
my entirely too frequent
bed partner pays a visit

veils around me are thin
sheer to nearly infinity
letting this psychic
monster ooze too near

low grade anxiety
uneasy nameless distress
climb right into my bed
to blanket me with
apprehension

to guarantee I don’t forget
all the endless possibilities
of unrelenting calamities
that lie just beyond
the next sunrise

from too much experience
I’ve learned the one way to
put this bastard to sleep is
beat him at his sick game

stare straight at his issues
and run him out to his
worst potential scenarios

when I accept I’ll withstand
even that he can no longer
be my middle of the
night tormenter
