Small Town Entertainment During the Week

Today, the day they call Wednesday
an acrid scent bewildered the air,
the morning sun reflecting gold
across boundaries of pampas grass,
ornamental greenery, brush and thicket.

Even after the fire ended, ash remained,
a singing of wind through ruined metal,
one car intact but injured--the walls bent,
the roof off to one side, the gathering of debris
and still the concrete pad holds onto its forge.

A line of cars come down the alleyway
flashing photos of what is left, what is always left
after a song becomes part of your head
finally allows its melody to sliver away
and wait for another passage to remove the boredom.
