Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, Writer...

Erren Kelly

your best words became your husband’s
best sellers

He called you a “third-rate novelist” and
a “amatuer” ballerina
you and he were the kurt cobain
and courtney love
of the jazz age

you was a southern belle
the daughter of a judge
a child who lived in
the treetops

you were a flapper girl
you wore a flesh colored bathing
suit because you had a good
figure
you once jumped in a fountain
in you evening dress
and you rode on the top
of a taxi cab
down fifth avenue

you danced in your
schizophrenia

the more tragic you were
the more beautiful you
became

picasso painted you

unlike his cubism
with you, he actually
expressed truth
he said you talked
too fast, but your voice was
rich as molasses

like your dancing,
your southern accent
made every word a poem
you could’ve been another
ballerina, who became chopin’s
muse

the worse thing a woman can be
to a writer is his muse
because your dreams can end up
his

but you wrote a novel behind his back
and published it
you took your fire
back

real power is the iron fist
in the velvet glove
the shadow behind the genius
