Arm

Andrew Leggett

In summer, the short sleeves of the blue school shirt expose too much of the boy’s arms. On the right, the sleeve stops just above the keloid scar, sparking classmates’ curiosity. The boy is not aware of the possibility of privacy, so does not question why the others need to know. Every time, he tells the story. To demonstrate the indentation where the scalpel broke dead skin and burst the abscess that formed in a burned compartment, the boy supinates the arm. He tells the little he remembers, and some of the rest that he’s been told. When he was two, he climbed towards a bench top, pulled a jug of boiling water down. He does not remember screaming, searing pain or the weeks of delirium. In the face of further threat, his body recalls vthe mother’s hand that held him as he teetered between worlds. Detachment, as he tells the story, will later serve him well, when in medical school, an arm is presented for anatomical dissection.
