Downpipe

Andrew Leggett

From my office window, through the vertical slats of the blind, the space I see could be a prison yard. There is no escape from the stone wall of the high dependency unit. It bears a crooked downpipe, bent and discontinuous at shoulder height where rust shows through, at the broken joint, below the russet paint. The iron roof curves away above the guttering to form a stark horizon where it meets the cyan sky, across which wisps of stratus cloud drift, occasionally crossing the half a ball that makes the day’s first quarter moon. This is not a day for rain, so the spider in the broken pipe will not be evicted. Patients may be discharged, but the spider remains.
