Tunnelvision

Richard K. Williams

My dad always blew the car horn
Whenever he drove through a tunnel
I missed my chance to inquire why
He’s been gone over twenty nine years
Not that it would have mattered anyway
I’m sure the answer would have been
Another part of his quirky humorous side
Besides, who says you have to have a reason
For everything in life
Because, on a long family trip
With a car full of kids
Breaking the monotony, and giving
The bored fidgety children
A few seconds of excitement
Is what a good parent did
In the days before
Cell phones, head phones
And portable video players
It became a ritual, a tradition
We would yell for dad
To blow the horn
Whenever we entered a tunnel
I like to think he got
As much joy from it as we did
I still do it, blow the horn in tunnels
My son does it too
Mostly as a living memorial
And because
You don’t mess with tradition
