Things I Must Remember

    These are the things I must remember if I want to become a great man: respect yourself; don’t act like you’re better; study hard; don’t appear too studious; say yes ma’am and no ma’am; look people in the eye; give a firm handshake; don’t intimidate people; don’t fight; never carry a weapon; always defend yourself; keep some money on you at all times; don’t carry too much money; dress to blend in; no hoodies; keep your shirt on; no beaters; nice shoes, but not too expensive-looking; hair should be short, or braided, or natural; hair should be legal, and neat; talk proper; don’t talk like you’re better than anyone else; know your history, but don’t act too proud of it; don’t be afraid of white people – they’re not all bad; but some are, a lot of them are; black is beautiful, but not everyone thinks so; drive under the speed limit; don’t drive too slow; keep your car in good working order; no flashy rims, no tinted windows; hands on the dash when you get pulled over; don’t pull out a cell phone; don’t reach for the glove box; ask for a lawyer; do not submit; do not resist; do not run; if you run, zigzag.

    These are the things I will not remember: the taste of asphalt; the weight of a man with a gun and permission to kill me on my back; the sound of my sister screaming; the sound of the gun firing; the recognition of pain before the pain; the fact that I will never be allowed to become a great man.
