The Street Outside

To some my natural environment is out there
Out there on the street with the delinquents
The mad and those at the very end of their luck
But right now
With town on the verge of lock-down,
My best bar shut for months to come
And everywhere else nowhere near scaling
Those giddy heights that bar stool could
Offer there is no reason for me to be out
There.

I’m doing fine, for now at least,
Home alone with my fine old friend the
Radio playing me some fine young Beethoven
An early Elmore Leonard novel part read but
Still plenty more to go and a pile of films
That i want to view.

But sometimes my mind drifts away from
That next movie
That next chapter
That next musical interlude
And back out there.
I wonder about my
Old manor and how the gang members will
Feel compelled to stay at home, and down
Here by the sea I just know the junkies will
Still need fixing and can someone just tell
Me how a homeless person can self-isolate?

The look on the street is life carries on
Nothing changes around here so long as
Some need fixing and I just wonder how
Many will still be around once we’re all
Allowed back out.
