Momentarily

outside it’s unseasonably warm
for the first of March
sunny and peaceful
the tree in the front yard
teems with sparrows tweeting
gobbling last year’s dried fruits
I close my eyes

they spring open
to a thrashing of wings and branches
perhaps two dozen scatter in terror
as the hawk chooses his target
pursues him over the neighbor’s rooftop
and disappears

I watch the sky
but see nothing
hear only silence
after awhile, I go inside

later, I step out
see him circling—
well, it could be him
it could be another
there’s always another

momentarily here
on the ground
in the empty branches
of the tree
there is peace
