Why So High

there they are again—
the gulls
flying so high
I can barely see them
and again
I wonder why—
they are not hunters
like the hawk, circling,
scanning the ground
for prey
as if they even could
from that height
so why
I ask myself, again,
why bother to fly
so high?
and this time
myself answers I
with a question
that needs no answer—
wouldn’t you
if you could?
