In the hallway is
a crash cart in case
one of my creative writing
students overdose

When did reality
become enough of a crime
to get you institutionalized

If you just maintain
linear thinking
you are at least
guaranteed a job
in mid-level management
& overrated grandchildren

I’ve never been
but whenever I now hear
a car backfire
I take cover as if someone
is shooting at me

If I still feel safe on
the golf course
I now find an excuse
to no longer go hunting
with my fellow executives

Do you remember when America
used to wake up with a martini
and go to bed in a bikini?
—reminisced one of my neighbors

Even if the war in Southeast
Asia ended long ago
—wrote one of my students
I’m still waiting for my free pizza
