Sometimes images
& metaphors
are for smashing

the way my creative writing students
at the Veterans Home & Hospital
often kicked in
smashed
or just ripped the door
off the hinges
of the last home they lived in
before getting arrested and
eventually winding up in this
state-run institution

The wife the kids the dog but
mostly the goddamn government
for not giving the right medication
for not giving you any at all
for sending you to some war

which is why a door is sometimes
not a symbol of being locked out or
invited in

it’s just the last thing
you were able to break
in a life
that finally had enough
of being broken
