What if our bodies were trees?

Lucio H. Cooper

In a cracked pot
Chlorophyll leaks out of your mouth,
sap on the floor,
drips,
from the lights
that constantly
buzz and hiss-

You went from a mighty Sequoia
in the Redwoods,
To a broken Aero Garden
in hospice care.
A frayed cord plugged into static.

Your once mighty roots
are too weak
to reach the pill bottles
full of fertilizer,
your brittle leaves
falling off
on white sheets-
you turn your mouth
for water
but get
nothing but,

an I.V. Bag
full of weed killer
as

            black vines
            spread-

and
block-out,

all the sun light.
