A Barrel of Rain
Mistaken for a Small Pond
in the Middle of Kansas

Jason Ryberg

It was mid-July and
my cousin and I had been
digging post-holes all day
(which in case you haven’t
had the pleasure, should provide
all the motivation a young
Midwesterner could ever need
to study hard in school).

And before the truck had even
come to a complete stop,
he had jumped out of the bed and,
fully clothed, into the rain barrel
next to the back porch, which he
proclaimed, there and then, to be his
own private pond / KEEP OUT! /
NO TRESSPASSING ALLOWED!

And there he sat, submerging himself,
from time to time, then slowly resurfacing
like Martin Sheen in the final showdown
scene in Apocalypse Now,

spewing water at any man or beast
that dared to dare come near,

and all the while ordering me
to fetch him beer after beer,
and refusing to get out for almost an hour.
