Midnight visitors

Hairy feet are scratching and clawing at my head. Instantly I’m awake, screaming.
There are black rats scurrying across the pillow. More are under the blanket, tearing at my legs.
They rush over each other, pour onto the floor and flood away. I’m left sweating and bleeding, my heart pounding.
The next night they fill the room. Brown and bloated, they run through the hollow walls and in the attic.
One climbs onto the shelf above me, then drops onto my face. I swing at it, but quicksilver-like it dashes off.
I cannot take this torment any longer.
Tomorrow I must finally give up the bottle.
