After the Hard Spring Rain

After the hard Spring rain
the yard bursts into life.
Ten robins march across the lawn
like a red coat regiment
tugging worms from their hidey holes.
While chickadees, goldfinches, and sparrows
fly sine wave style, cycling
between the bushes and the feeder.
Furiously fluttering, fighting
for position and purchase.

Squirrels caper beneath
catching the cast-off seeds
birds rain down upon them.
Then attempting a murder
three crows swoop in
frightening the squirrels
scattering the other birds.
Who flee to the hedges.
They watch in irritation
as the bigger birds’ strut
around the yard like
they own the place.

Through our picture window
my wife and I watch
like television sportscasters.
Adding commentary
as the action unfolds.
On our lawn, in our yard
after the hard spring rain.
