Fathers Pride

Richard K. Williams

In Larry’s sweltering TV room.
Where the wood stove glowed
cast iron popping with heat.
In direct contrast with every other
room in his house.

We sat around the square table
six of us. Larry, his son Scott.
Scotts kids, Clara, Reed, Eli, and
Me, the surrogate brother of the family.

We discuss everything, and anything,
nothing is off limits, mild ridicule included.
But we laugh like hell, till our ribs ache.
Making the hours pass far too quickly.

Scott who has arrived “in his cups”
solemnly points out that for the last
four hours his children, not once
have touched their cell phones.

Following his pontification
upon how pleased he was
with their temporary departure
from the digital dark ages.

He rose upright in his chair
expanded his chest and exclaimed
“The other day, Eli called me a dick!”
“Didn’t ya!” directly addressing the teenager
as proud of his son as if he had
made the honor role at school.

Man! Did our ribs ache after that!
