Freedom, Really?

Back in sixty nine
When I was in school
Teachers took great pride
In teaching us that America
Was the great melting pot.
Radio and TV reported
That America was
the land of the free
the home of the brave
Anyone wanting to be free
Was welcome here

What is confusing to me is
Were they speaking out of ignorance?
Or just plain lying?
What the hell happened?
When was it decided
The lid on the melting pot
needed
to be bolted down
wrapped in chain
and welded shut?
The media, social and mainstream
Now instill fear and loathing
Of anything and everything
Anyone and everyone

Its tough to feel free
When our civil liberties
Are frightened away from us
Using the false promise
Of protecting freedom
Our fears allow government
To reduce freedom and justice
For all
We’ll have freedom
As long as we toe the line
Do as we’re told
Keep our mouths shut
Hate who you’re told to hate
Fear what you’re told to fear

Somebody please explain to me
How it works; submit to tyranny
to be free
