The Deer Feed On Cherries At Dusk

Yes the round red fruit
are beautiful
but no more than the
alert chalcedony eyes
of the white-tailed deer.

The real ugliness is fences,
has been since man and creature
competed for space.
That’s why the forest, my yard,
are mutual.

So the cherry trees bloom
in the belly of the light.
And the deer cluster in oak-shadows,
feed in the fading day.

There’s a quiet urgency
to their nibbling,
a cherry-red haze
in the sky.
