The way I used to inquire
about the time
I now inquire about
what reality we are in

It always starts with some-
one taking my blood
pressure
It always ends
with a pill
to make me happy

Heraclites may have never
stepped into the same river
twice
but whether I was selling
drugs on a street corner
in Hartford or teaching
creative writing at Harvard
it was always the same job

Lately vultures have begun
to circle my suburb the same
way they do those roofless
towers in India where the
Parsees bury their dead

This was not the resurrection
we were taught

But these are the only
angels that will come
