Either a car wreck
that started out as
your latest relationship
or novel
or a lost child or sibling
and who once again
without warning
crashes into your life

Picking up the pieces
like a couple of teeth
knocked out after
a bar fight
—no wonder
no one smiles anymore
(but luckily we still
have the stamina or
stupidity to get up each
day to go to work)

For more than fifty years
a doctor has been gently
grabbing my balls and
asking me to cough

—but the last time I entered
the exam room
it was empty & white and
while I thought I felt
fine
I knew that a lot more
than the declining sum
of me

was sick
