The graduation photos
came today: your head,
sheared by the radiation,
bore a cap of azure blue,

contrasting with the sallow
skin that hung loose from
your bones. I wonder if
you knew it was your peak,

the closest thing you’d get
to a wedding day; I look for
answers in your sunken
eyes, nested like eggs

at the back of your skull.
Poor bastard: betrayed by
your own marrow, the
malignant seed of some

unspeakable genetic twitch.
They tell me you enjoyed
the solitude, the quiet nights
alone in your bedroom, with

no nurses to poke and prod
at you, no chemo, no pissing
in a bed pan; I hope it’s true,
for your sake and for mine.
