Clones

Susie Gharib

My daughter who read about cloning in some discarded magazine
told me she would like to clone her favorite classmate
who disappeared with a playboy every weekend.

In an assignment for the history course she proposed to propagate
the cloning of pacifists
before they are assassinated by devotees,
an antidote for future wars that rogues orchestrate.

Every time I lavish my encomium on a human or dog,
she responds by reiterating one single word:
clone.

I am allowed to trespass into her room
to clear the mess over which she broods,
and though I’d never peeped into her notes,
the open annal enticed a look
with a title that carried the weight of doom.
She wrote:
How do we know we’re not all clones
of a race that deserted this God-damned world
for it should be widely known
that clones cannot be cloned!
