I had the flu on our first date;
you said you’d stop by.

You brought me some soup
and a bouquet of Spring,
though it surely was Winter here.

I was sore in the nose, coughing,
spitting, red eyed and wobbly;
my tissues all scattered around.

Watching the Twilight Zone
marathon, you stayed through the
night on the round-about couch.

There was no need for lipstick
or pretense when I woke in
the morning; you’d already seen
all my vertical edges.

In lieu of another ‘first date,’ you
asked me to marry you and that’s
what we did, seven months later.
