The mom on the pole

Emalisa Rose

Lurianna was her stripper name.

It was long and Parisienne, so she thought;
lyrically lovely with several syllables.

She danced acapella, by the tumbleweeds,
at the quick stops where renegades mingled
in singed sheets, by the shouldering highways
and the voyeuring windows.

Once she danced clubs in the cities, but for
family reasons, settled for small town mundanity.

It paid all the bills without need for men,
after her bodybank closed for the night.

With her legs in contortions, swirling on poles
in acrobat poses, it was life on her own terms.
Neither a here nor a there, but it fed her.

It’s perfect, she says; more esoteric than Jane’s
would have been. Jane was her given name -
Jane, of one syllable.
