they say
athena
gave medusa
a gift,

but if i were
as beautiful as she;

stripped of my beauty because
a man raped me
i don’t think i would consider it
a kindness that i became a monster
heroes would consider a goal to kill—

they say she was given a gift so that
no man could ever hurt her

so explain why her head was severed
from her shoulders and used as a weapon
by athena, herself?

it seems that medusa was afforded no kindness
by anyone, and it makes me angry;

because today, today still, we blame the victim
and make monsters of the women who
dare to survive;

if it makes us monsters not to break under the patriarchy
then shatter your precious patriarchy until it is devoured by the sea.
