My Star Teacher

If not for you, I’d never have known
that the sky is some kind of performance art
involving swans and hunters, lions and bears,
charioteers and shining virgins.

It would have been just darkness
dotted here and there with shiny baubles.
But you pointed out the actors
from watercarriers to the great winged horse.

I owe you the view from my window,
and its even more splendid counterpart,
the show put on for those who venture
into the open fields on cool, clear nights.

So many constellations,
such a perfect teacher.
No gaze upward was ever wasted.
Same with a glance in your direction.
